When he finds out they were a friend of Toni Bernette, he goes to break the bad news himself. Delmond Lambreaux lets his new girlfriend Brandi help him sort out his place. He plays a gig with The Uptown Jazz Orchestra at Snug Harbor. He is concerned by Albert Lambreaux's persistent cough and encourages him to see a doctor. Albert is diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and given a program of lifestyle modifications and inhalers. LaDonna moves out of her in-laws home after Antoine Batiste is left off the visiting list to see their sons. She is frustrated by the justice system's failure to set a trial date for her rapist. Antoine is disappointed that his sons are not interested in music lessons but is enjoying his teaching role. He takes Desiree and two of his students to see the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. L.P. Everett makes headway in his vigilante killings piece, identifying the victim of a shooting incident. Janette gets a business proposal from Tim Feeny; he wants to fund her to open a restaurant in New Orleans. She agrees to consider it and talks it over with David Chang, who believes she will accept. Sonny continues his awkward courtship with Linh; her father accompanies them on a date to The Spotted Cat. Sonny runs into an old friend who lets him know about a keyboard slot with Guitar Lightnin' Lee. Annie records a demo with her new band and lands herself a manager. Davis unsuccessfully tries to recruit John Boutte for his opera project. Nelson Hidalgo finds out more about the misuse of NOAH money and blackmails his way into a contract.

Plot[]

Sonny is frustrated in his relationship with Linh. He feels that they are like teenagers sneaking around her parents and unable to spend any real time together. She teases him about the situation.

Sonny attends a Spencer Bohren gig and runs into an old friend. He learns that Guitar Lightnin' Lee has an opening for a keyboard player. Sonny takes Linh out to the Spotted Cat, but they are accompanied by her father Honh. Sonny lands the gig with Lee and his debut is a success.

Annie and her band record a demo with producer Don B. Davis McAlary watches enthusiastically from the sound desk as Annie rocks a cut of "That All You Got?" Davis heads to WWOZ to present his show. He is joined by John Boutte. Boutte debuts an unused recording of "Milton". Davis invites him to take part in his opera project but Boutte says that he is too busy.

Annie plays a Halloween gig at One Eyed Jacks, opening for Quintron & Miss Pussycat. After her set she talks to music manager Marvin Frey about joining his client roster. She assures him that she is now ready and he encourages her to keep writing original material. They agree to meet to talk terms. The next morning Annie eats breakfast with Davis and confesses that she thinks Frey is sexually attracted to her.

Terry Colson's squad catches a home invasion murder. Detective Luis Calderon insists that the victim's homosexuality is important but Colson refuses to let that unduly color the investigation. Colson finds out the victim, hairdresser Jay Cardella, was a friend of Toni Bernette and goes to break the bad news himself. She affirms his instinct by telling him that Jay had settled down with a long-term partner and the relationship had only recently ended. Terry is annoyed when Calderon takes a detail position, interfering with the case work. Detective Anthony Nokolich reports that they missed evidence at the scene. Energized by his wife refusing to let his son's visit while he is in a FEMA trailer, Colson begins work on his house.

Antoine Batiste leads band practice at Elie middle school. He is impressed by the improvisation of Jennifer but reminds her that a marching band needs to play in unison. The practice ends abruptly when a fight breaks out between two boys. Both students are suspended and Antoine talks through the circumstances with head of music Darren Lecoeur. He learns that the brother of one of the boys was a witness to a crime and is rumored to have spoken to the police, leading to the bad feeling. Jennifer visits Antoine's classroom during recess and takes an interest in the trad jazz he is listening to. Antoine plans to take Jennifer and a friend to Preservation Hall and talks Desiree into accompanying him in order to make the girls more comfortable. Desiree is impressed that he is focused on his teaching role.

LaDonna Batiste-Williams attends a court hearing with ADA Brigitte Baron. She defiantly stares out her rapist when he is brought in. She is disappointed when the only progress is scheduling a hearing to set a trial date.

Antoine visits his sons at their new home, staying with LaDonna's in-laws. He is stopped at the gate of the closed community because his name is not on the list. He calls LaDonna who ensures that he gets access. Antoine encourages the boys to take up music lessons but finds them disinterested. LaDonna is furious that Victorine had not added Antoine's name to her visitor list. She moves out of Victorine's house, refusing to spend another night there. She implores Larry to find their family a house of their own.

Albert and Delmond Lambreaux visit the grave of Delmond's mother. Delmond encourages Albert to see a doctor about his persistent cough. Albert is diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder and given a regimen of breathing exercises and inhalers and told to wear a mask at work.

L.P. interviews Algiers residents about vigilante shootings during Hurricane Katrina. His first source, mechanic De'Andre Roberts, is unable to give him specifics but puts him on to William Tanner, who might know more. Tanner gives a firsthand account of trying to help a man named King during the storm. He had been shot by a store owner and Tanner used his car to drive him to a police operations base that had been set up at a nearby school. The police assumed they were all looters and beat Tanner up. They took the car and King away. Tanner was later informed that the car had been found, torched, on the banks of the river. L.P. is astounded at the bizarre actions of the police. L.P. goes through the morgue records and finds a report on a burnt body with gunshot wounds, identifying King.

Nelson Hidalgo attends a community meeting to find out more about the New Orleans Affordable Housing (NOAH) project. He listens as angry residents complain about the lack of actual work being done on properties marked with NOAH signs. After the meeting he learns from well informed protester Pamela Galette that the key to accessing NOAH funds is a personal connection to the project manager.

Nelson approaches Robinette for a list of addresses he is working on for Loretta Mortensen. He checks the addresses and finds proof that she is not using the funds to improve the properties; they include an empty lot and a house that has been entirely rehabbed by a church volunteer group. He uses the information to blackmail Mortensen into getting him NOAH contracts, meeting her during a gig where Delmond plays with Delfeayo Marsalis and The Uptown Jazz Orchestra. Nelson sets up a company to handle the contracts, naming Robinette as his partner. They celebrate at Gigi's Lounge and Nelson reacquaints himself with LaDonna.

Tim Feeny remains a regular presence at Lucky Peach in New York. Janette Desautel finally asks what he wants and learns that he is hoping to recruit her as head chef of a New Orleans restaurant. She is intrigued enough to go out to dinner with him. She is impressed when he takes her to Torrisi's. Janette turns to David Chang for advice and he urges her to take a chance.

Albert explains his diagnosis to Delmond at Indian practice. Delmond is doubtful that Albert will follow the doctor's instructions and emphasizes the need for him to wear a mask at work. Delmond offers to start the practice so that Albert can rest. The Guardians are reluctant to join him initially but he wins them over.
